My name is John and I am from Texas.
I love making music
I release music as a solo artist under the name Electropunk Zero. I also love writing music for video games. Check out my music page to listen.
I have a good mix of formal and self education. I spent a little time studying composition and performance at University of North Texas and Berklee College of Music but my bachelor’s degree is in computer science. My first instrument was the violin in the 1990s, followed by the guitar and then piano. I own a Fender electric violin and guitar, but my favorite instrument is my ROLI Seaboard RISE 2.
Once upon a time, I performed in orchestra, choir, church bands, rock bands, and open mic nights. These days, I enjoy composing and producing music on my computer at home. I also love teaching, technical writing, and creating tutorials. Check out the tutorials page to read and watch.
I love programming
My professional career and day job have always been in tech and cybersecurity industry. I specialize in software and security architecture.
I have spoken at conferences, published books, built a virtual hackerspace, grown a YouTube channel, and built SaaS products.
My first programming experience was with QBASIC in DOS in the 1990s. Over decades, I have worked with dozens of programming languages.
Combining music and software
When it comes to hobbies, I love combining music and software. There are many programmers who are also musicians. In 2017, I wrote an essay about the similarities between music and programming.
I enjoy combining art and programming, especially with creative coding tools like Processing/p5.js, Blender, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Kontakt/KSP, and JUCE.
